The SM Hotels and Conventions Corporation (SMHCC) has received a citation from the National Privacy Commission (NPC) for the contact-tracing technology it employs in view of the coronavirus pandemic.

Regarded by the NPC as one of the best practices in handling contact tracing data, SMHCC’s system ensures health and hygiene protocols in all its properties.

Through the said platform, SMHCC said its guests experience pleasant and hassle-free navigation without unnecessary questions and thumb movements/thumb clicks.
Designed with a user-friendly interface, it works on any platform, browser, and any type of mobile phone.

As SMHCC said it strictly adheres to the Data Privacy Act, and the usage of the platform closely takes into account its guests’ right to privacy.

A brainchild of SMHCC vice-president for Technical Services Eric Uy, the platform appeal to the guests’ sense of civic duty to help in curbing the spread of the virus.

“We do not force them into anything and we do not repurpose the data for any other objective apart from strict compliance to health protocols,” Uy said.
After a successful pilot in SM properties, the same technology is now being used by SM Supermalls.

The SM group said even government entities and some healthcare institutions have patterned their own contact-tracing initiatives after the SMHCC developed software.
